Specify the load and how it moves

The brief should describe the goods, maximum intended load, overall dimensions and how the load reaches the lift. Trolleys, pallet equipment and other handling devices affect the space and loading arrangement and must be included when relevant.

Provide the required stops, loading direction and available landing space. A platform that fits the goods does not by itself establish that the surrounding loading area is suitable.

Goods-only and attendant use are different

Do not assume people may travel in a goods lift. The permitted use must be explicit in the approved equipment specification. Where an attendant is needed, raise this at the start rather than adapting a goods-only system later.

Match the system to the operating environment

Explain the expected frequency of use, whether the installation is enclosed or exposed, and the conditions of the building. Different freight lifts and lifting platforms can require different structures, controls and access arrangements.
