Technical description

In a traction lift, the controller starts the drive machine and moves the car in the required direction. The car and counterweight are connected by steel ropes running over a traction sheave. Their balanced weights help reduce the energy needed for travel. The published source also describes drum-driven lifts, in which a rope or chain winds onto a drum.
The published passenger-lift load classes are 100, 180, 240, 320, 400, 630, 800 and 1,000 kg for residential use; 630, 800, 1,000, 1,200 and 1,600 kg for non-residential use; and 1,600, 2,000 and 2,500 kg for healthcare facilities. Listed speed classes are 0.63, 1.0, 1.6 and 2.5 m/s, plus speeds above 2.5 m/s. Car, machine-room and hoistway dimensions, as well as drive and brake ratings, depend on the selected load and speed. An overspeed governor is part of the safety system and initiates the safety gear when excessive speed is detected.
